Essay 4: Reflective essay
To insure that your final drafts are the best they can be and, more importantly, to help you take with you what you've learned about writing and research this term, your final assignment is to reflect upon each of your essays as you revise them, using the questions (in boldface) below to guide you.
Reflection on essay 1: Given the writing task assigned, your audience, and your purpose in writing, how have you revised your first essay to strengthen your thesis and your analysis of evidence?
Reflection on essay 2: Given the assignment, your audience, and your purpose in writing, how have you revised your second essay to make the most effective use of the historical research you've gathered?
Reflection on essay 3: Given the assignment, your audience, and your purpose in writing, how have you revised your third essay to make the best use of the ethnographic research you've gathered, as well as your scholarly texts (i.e., Mumford and Zukin)?
Each of your responses will have two parts: a "Before" section and an "After" section. The“Before” section should be structured like this:
- In the first paragraph, concisely describe, in your own words, the assignment and the audience for it.
- In the second paragraph, concisely describe your purpose in the essay: What argument and/or story are you trying to make/tell?
- In the paragraphs that follow, describe in detail your plan to revise, quoting from your own text in order to explain the reasoning behind your plan.
After you're done revising, write the “After” section: Explain how the specific revisions you’ve made serve to strengthen the essay overall in the ways that you discussed in the “Before” section, quoting from your own (now revised) text.
Use headings to identify each section ("Essay 1: Before," "Essay 1: After").
